For Women Who Love Whales

Watercolour by Rachel Byler

Those close to me know I hold a sacred space in my heart for the Southern Resident Orca Whales of the Salish Sea. They came to me in a significant dream over ten years ago, and ever since, I’ve tried to learn as much about them as I could. This has led to some pretty amazing experiences…like joining orcasoundings.org and matchmaking humans to orcas, building enormous orca puppets, walking 10K with other orca lovers against the KM pipeline, teaching elementary school students about their matriarchal family structures, and serendipitously camping with a whale researcher on San Juan Island! All the while, experiencing many more vivid dreams about orcas.

So, it’s a rip in the heart to recently learn that three of our residents have gone missing and are presumed dead, dropping their total population to a mere 73 whales.  These animals are in peril and I just can’t sit on my hands.

Heal yourself and help the orcas too
I’m donating 15% of my consultation fees between Aug 14th and Sept 14th to two organizations dedicated to making a difference to their survival:

1) The Centre for Whale Research on San Juan Island, WA. They’ve been studying these animals for 43 years and work hard to educate the public and are one of their fiercest protectors.

2) Pull Together – a campaign to fund indigenous legal challenges against the TMX Pipeline, by RAVEN (Respecting Aboriginal Values & Environmental Needs) Trust. Pipelines mean more tanker traffic, noise pollution, and potential deadly bitumen spills.

Book and pay for an online Homeopathy consultation before Sept 14, 2019, and I’ll donate 15% of my fee to the organization of your choice.

And if you have a sister, a girlfriend or mother needing support with their health goals, please share this offer with them because if it’s an initial consult, I’ll donate 20%.

The height of summer is THE time to work on generating more vitality so that it’s as strong as possible during the colder months; and Homeopathic medicine offers an individualized approach to this by helping release pain, emotion and that which is no longer serving you, preventing you from living your most energetic life.

September 14th is my birthday, and my greatest pleasure would be to send donations that we, as women who love whales, have generated together through the spinning of a web homeopathic healing.

To book a session, please contact me here.

A Springtime of Wellness

Dear Reader,

Spring is finally warming our faces with sunshine, gifting us with colour and oh! how amazing it feels. I’m delighted by each new bloom I see and smell.

Unfortunately, other changes can make the transition to spring difficult for your vital force to adapt to:

  • fresh food after a winter of hearty meals
  • foreign pollens flying through the air… (read the rest of my newsletter here)

It’s Gemmotherapy Season

And I don’t mean gemstones.  Gemmo is Latin for “bud” and Gemmotherapy tinctures are made from the buds of plants.

Gemmotherapy is a wonderful hybrid therapy that lies closer on the scale to herbalism than homeopathy and it stands out for using tinctures that are slightly diluted to help cell drainage.  All gemmotherapy tinctures are made from the buds of plants instead of leaves/roots/flowers/barks as budding is the time when a plant is teaming with life.

It’s also known as Plant Stem Cells Therapy (PST) because of its potential for rejuvenation and regeneration.  Buds hold the code for the entire plant and have unique chemical components that can:

  • stimulate cell growth
  • provide better resistance to disease
  • help regenerate tissue
  • modulate inflammation
  • stimulate RNA and protein synthesis
  • prevent cancer
  • regulate and optimize apoptosis (cell death)

Gemmotherapy tinctures are made in water, glycerine AND alcohol, so it contains therapeutic benefits not possible to achieve by extraction of one of these alone.

Detoxification is a multi-step process, and Gemmotherapy helps by gently opening up elimination pathways and stimulating organ systems to detox towards them.

Some of my favorite Gemmos include:

  • Ribes Nigrum for allergic constitutions.
  • Rosa Canina for strengthening the immune system against viruses.
  • Abies Pectinata for children who have difficulty absorbing nutrition from their food.
  • Rosemarinus Officinalis combined with Rubus Ideaus (Raspberry) to detox the female reproductive system.
  • Tilia Tomentosa and Ficus Carica to help calm the nervous system and bring about sleep.
  • Rosemarinus with Juniperus Communis to detox the liver and kidney systems.  This is a wonderful spring cleansing protocol that helps clear many elimination pathways and can leave you feeling revitalized.

We are only as strong as our weakest link.  It’s this adage that led me to discover this helpful group of healing tinctures for at times, what seemed to be a good homeopathic remedy, would appear to not be working as well as it could.  By targeting a sluggish system in the body with Gemmos, the constitutional remedy would again pick up momentum and progress would continue.

Gemmos are wonderful to assist with seasonal transitions and taking a course of them for a couple of weeks four times a year is very helpful for maintaining vitality.

Gratitude and Emotional Health

gratitude

Over the holiday, as I gathered winter offerings on a walk, I was reflecting on what makes it hard for some people to find their sense of gratitude and how this can be helped using homeopathy.  One of the basic premises of homeopathy is that the mind, body and emotions are inseparably inter-linked.  Ungratefulness can be seen as a symptom just as important as any other.

Sulphur might be needed for the person who can’t find a sense of gratitude because their need for appreciation is so strong. Their sense of lack is so deeply rooted, they cannot but compare themselves to what they aren’t getting and then act with jealousy or anger.  Children who experience sibling rivalry when a new baby is born would be an example. To make a good prescription of Sulphur, you’d need to see other symptoms, such as skin and digestion issues, with a strong internal warmth and feeling worse with heat, smelly discharges and/or burning pains.

Someone needing Bryonia, on the other hand, is challenged to feel grateful for different reasons: loneliness and insecurity.  They’re purposely withdrawn and isolated from social contact because of a deep sense of vulnerability, weakness and sensitivity to any intrusions. Inside, they feel great unhappiness and despondency.  They just want to be left alone and any imposition, even consolation or well-meaning attempts to help, bring out their irritability and resentment. It’s this sensitivity that makes gratitude so out of reach for them.  Other symptoms that would round our a prescription for Bryonia would be dryness of mucous membranes, aggravation from any motion (they must lie still when in pain or ill), amelioration from pressure, thirstlessness and/or ailments that come on slowly.

I don’t have people coming to me specifically asking to feel more grateful, but as emotional and physical problems get addressed with constitutional homeopathy, energy and vitality increases, physical symptoms lessen and there is more emotional freedom. This, in turn, can strengthen one’s feelings of gratitude as a welcome result.

Thank you for taking the time to read these words, I feel so very grateful for this, as well as for the wonderful medicine homeopathy can offer!

Biochemic Tissue Salts

By the time I’d reached the end of my 4-year homeopathic training, I felt like my brain was so full of medicinal information on thousands of substances from the plant, mineral and animal kingdom, I couldn’t possibly absorb another bit.  And then we were given an overview on Biochemic cell salts.  “File that for later!”, was my immediate reaction. But really, I should’ve taken the cell salt Kali-phos that nourishes the nervous system for 3 weeks to recover from the mental exhaustion of school.

It took a couple of years before I finally delved into the healing benefits of cell salts (also called tissue salts, mineral salts or bioplasma cell salts) in my practice and I’m so glad I didn’t delay any longer.  This therapeutic has proved to be an invaluable part of my practice.

Akin to a 3rd cousin of homeopathy, the only similarity between these two therapies is that both are diluted – the mineral salts just slightly so that there is still some biochemical material matter left in the preparation, but making them so much easier to absorb than conventional mineral supplementation.  Primarily, they are considered a nutritional adjunct to your homeopathic care as many of our health conditions can be traced to a malabsorption.  We know that the soil is depleted due to inconsiderate farming practices and the rise of stress in everyday life creates many physical problems that can disrupt proper nourishment.

To delve into detailed descriptions about each salt, what role they play in the body and how to take them, here is a very useful resource written by Miranda Castro, RSHom : Homeopathy Today: Tissue Salts.

Bach Flower Essences

“There is no true healing unless there is a change in outlook, a peace of mind and inner happiness.” – Edward Bach, pioneer of Flower Essence healing systems b. 1886 d. 1936

Flower essences can be a wonderful adjunct to the homeopathic treatment plan and are used to ease emotional suffering.

Developed by British homeopathic physician Edward Bach, reknown for the “Rescue Remedy” formula, the system uses 38 flowers, each associated with a unique emotional state.  They can be taken alone or in combination of up to 5 essences at a time.  When one gets habituated to a particular emotional reaction or life’s circumstances has created emotional turmoil, a flower essence can help bring the emotions back into balance and soothe.

Consider Bach’s description of someone who could benefit from Scleranthus, a plant in the Carnation family: Those who suffer much from being unable to decide between two things, first one seeming right then the other. They are usually quiet people, and bear their difficulty alone, as they are not inclined to discuss it with others. – The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies

Unlike someone who needs Cerato, who feels so doubtful they need a second, third and fourth opinion, they will choose to chew it over alone, again and again. Taken for a time, Scleranthus can help one be more in touch with what they want and with their intuition.

The recommended dosage is 4 drops on the tongue, 4 to 6 times daily for as long as needed, for up to about six weeks maximum. The remedies will not interfere with prescribed medication or homeopathics and side-effects are rare. Once one layer has been treated and felt to change, then it can be useful to reassess and see what lies beneath.
